Passing the Torch

Date posted
2.8.2010

The Vancouver Chinatown BIA (VCBIA) approached the City of Vancouver last November to apply for the Olympic Torch to go through Chinatown. The City approved the application, and the VCBIA has organized the event "Passing the Torch in Chinatown." Even though the event was approved several months ago, much of the information was unavailable to the VCBIA, for security and confidentiality reasons, until very recently.

The most up-to-date information about this event that we have is that the Olympic Torch will come through Chinatown on February 12, and we will host an assortment of entertainment:

Date:
Friday February 12, 2010

Time:
8:30am - 10:30am

Location:
Corner of Pender and Carrall Street

Entertainment:
Lion dancing, Korean drums ensemble, Japanese Taiko drums, Olympic themed games, spinning wheel, prizes and gifts.

The torch will come through the Millenium Gates (Pender Street) at around 8:30 - 10am towards Columbia Street. It will heads towards Gastown through Columbia Street. Then it will go through East Hastings Street and return to Chinatown on Keefer Street, where it will then depart to Strathcona. The torch will continue to go through different areas in Vancouver until sunset where it will go into BC Place.

We welcome all merchants and the public to come celebrate the "Passing of the Torch in Chinatown" with us on February 12 at 8:30am at Pender and Carrall Street. Not only will there be live entertainment, but the community can get together and share in the excitement of the Olympics. Everyone can wave their Canadian flags as the torch comes through, cheering on the torch bearer.

The VCBIA planned this event so that no roads will need to be blocked during the above times. However, when the torch actually comes through, there is a 15 minute time period where cars, bikes and pedestrians are not to cross the path of the torch. Please be aware of this when commuting in the morning of February 12. For any questions please contact the VCBIA at 604-632-3808. Thank you for your cooperation!
