Vancouver Chinatown Festival - 2010

Date posted

We are proud to say, the 11th Chinatown Festival was a success. It was a big festival, two days full of entertainment, dance, food and culture.

The festival opened on Saturday with the traditional welcome and greetings by representatives of all levels of government; federal, provincial and municipal as well as the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China.

This year is the 125th anniversary of Vancouver Chinatown. Because of this, the theme of the Festival was "Leap from a Proud Heritage". After so many years we still conserve our culture and build our heritage.

In keeping with the theme, during the day, you could find an artist making folk art demonstration using strong colors, solid images, auspicious themes, rich and genuine compositions.

Another highlight was the walking tour. Walking around Chinatown is possible to see a lot of history, learn about the heritage and try delicious food. This is what many goers had done during the festival.

Another way to know more about Chinatown is the 125th Anniversary Vancouver Chinatown photo exhibition. These photos were exposed during the Festival, but if you didn’t have the opportunity to see this great exhibition, you can find it at Building Opportunities with Business at 163 East Pender until September 7.

During August 14 and 15 you could find entertainment for all ages, the kids had their own place, Kids Corner, and there were a giant inflatable interactive game, face-painting, and balloon twisting.

In the evening the Streetfest took place there, the theme was “School boys and girls”. Those who had been there saw a lot of girls in skirts and shirts, enjoyed fun games, carnival foods, and lollipops.

At the Festival the new Mascot was launched. He or she appeared to all public waiting the people choose his or her name, which until now is a secret.

If you couldn’t go this year or if you went there but you want more, you can find everything and more next year. The 12th Chinatown Festival will take place between Keefer and Columbia St during August 13 and 14.
