The Carrall Street Greenway is connecting the neighbourhoods of Chinatown, Downtown Eastside and Gastown, and allowing recreational movement between the False Creek seawall and future Burrard Inlet seawall.
It is proposed to run along Carrall Street from False Creek to Portside Park, and will likely include bike lanes in both directions. The Greenway will connect a number of important cultural, historical, and recreational places along Carrall Street, including Creekside/Andy Livingstone Park, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens, Pigeon Park, Maple Tree Square and Portside Park.
The Carrall Street Greenway intends to address several layers of streetscape functions, including, but not necessarily limited to:
- Basic street design elements, such as sidewalks, curbs and plantings.
- Enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities and safety features, such as curb ramps, crosswalks, traffic signals, lighting and traffic calming measures.
- Functional changes in traffic flow patterns (two-waying Carrall Street between Pender and Cordova)
- Unique elements that would allow for greater recreational use and neighbourhood enjoyment of the streetscape.
- A public art program.
- CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) elements.
- Integration with existing parks and upgrading or modifying where necessary.
- Improved connections to the False Creek seawall and Port Lands waterfront area.
- Accommodation of cyclists.
- Provision of necessary vehicular access to surrounding land uses.
